FOX Weather Meteorologist Britta Merwin reports from the Point Pleasant Boardwalk in New Jersey where beaches are closed ahead of Hurricane Erin. The hurricane is forecast to bring the biggest waves to the Jersey shore beginning Thursday.

As the edges of Hurricane Erin get closer to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, much attention has been placed on Highway 12, a roughly 150-mile-long byway that connects that state’s islands and peninsulas. It is beloved by locals and tourists because of its scenic views of the ocean, sand dunes and old lighthouses.

While Hurricane Erin is drawing most of the attention, there are two other areas the National Hurricane Center is watching in the Atlantic.(MORE: Get the latest on Erin here)Late This Week Near The Leeward IslandsThe westernmost area of interest is now producing a broad area of thunderstorm activity as it continues its westward journey across the Atlantic between Africa and the Lesser Antilles.

Tracking areas most likely to see the impacts of storm surge and 20-foot waves - Hurricane Erin will bring storm surges and tropical storm conditions to parts of North Carolina and Virginia as it passes along the U.

Hurricane Erin’s latest forecast includes high winds, rough surf, and coastal flooding through Thursday and Friday at the Jersey Shore.

The City of Virginia Beach provided an update on preparedness efforts and potential impacts ahead of Hurricane Erin.

The center of Hurricane Erin is east of Florida and Palm Beach County on Wednesday, Aug. 20, as it continues to move north-northwest.

Dozens of people have been rescued from rip currents as Hurricane Erin churns up the Eastern seaboard. Authorities said about 60 people have been rescued from rip currents at Wrightsville Beach, N.C., according to the Wilmington Star-News and NBC affiliate WRAL-TV .
