Measles cases surge in Texas with latest update
HOUSTON — Texas health officials report that measles cases have jumped again in an update released Friday morning. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported that 198 measles cases in nine counties have been identified since late January. Twenty-three patients have been hospitalized.
Experts recommend that anyone not vaccinated against the measles should avoid large events like the Houston Rodeo amid an outbreak in northwest Texas.
Texas doctors said there's no harm in getting another measles vaccine if you don't know whether you were vaccinated as a child.
Since Tuesday is the first official day of the carnival and shows, HoustonRodeo officials are alerting goers to be vigilant about their health.
The Houston Health department is investigating two possible cases of measles in the city. The Houston rodeo plans to monitor the measles outbreak.
Dr. David Persse, HHD’s chief medical official, said he expects that more are getting their vaccine with their primary care physicians as West Texas outbreak grows.
