Those living in northwestern Mexico and the Baja California peninsula were urged to monitor the progress of the storm.
The government of Mexico has issued a tropical storm watch for the west coast of Baja California Sur, from Cabo San Lucas northward to Cabo San Lozaro. A watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours.
The storm was expected to continue strengthening throughout the day and heavy rain up to 15 inches was forecast for portions of the peninsula, the US National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
