The NPC villages still fairly frequently get intersected with other terrain features for example. And it's not unusual to see a snow biome next to a desert. The worst procedural generation I've seen was probably for Heroes of Might and Magic III.

I don't 'get' games like Garry's Mod, No Man's Sky, Minecraft, etc. Games without a narrative hook, a dangling carrot, any sort of goal to strive towards that the player didn't create or set for themselves.
